We spent just over a week in the eastern foothills of the Picos de Europa, hiking from place to place while our luggage was moved for us. The mid-June landscapes were beautiful, ranging from meadows stuffed with wild flowers and butterflies to bare limestone crags where we spotted an ibex and watched griffon vultures gliding. It was wonderful to be able to explore this quiet, semi-montane area with confidence.

Walking trips in destinations with hotter climates, such as those in deserts, can plunge to chilly temperatures at night, so be sure to bring layers, particularly if you are camping. Some countries also experience heavy or intermittent rainfall, so a waterproof is recommended. We loved the varied walking paths, from a broad track through tall conifers along the River Teign, walking near wild horses while climbing up various unique Tor… You will need to have insurance that will cover hiking and trekking in certain destinations up to a certain elevation (in the Himalayas, Peru, and a few other destinations that feature altitude hikes). But you won’t need any special insurance to cover technical activities. We walked the well marked trails from Bacharach to Koblenz following On Foot’s directions, using both their printed information and their app. The accommodations were excellent with friendly and helpful staff. Our On Foot local contact kept in touch with lots of encouragement. All itineraries feature a packing list on the ‘Essential Trip Information’ document.

For the first few days, walking through incredibly beautiful countryside, we hardly saw a soul and we loved how every day was completely different. While the route was challenging for pensioner knees, the terrain was mainly very good underfoot, so no scrambling, and the views were absolutely worth the effort. We came home with a real sense of achievement and a commitment to tackle one of On Foot’s other Spanish routes.

Short transfers may be added for convenience, and we transport your luggage for you. Group sizes are limited to a maximum of 16 to allow easier interaction with the local people and to leave fewer footprints in a world where it is important that we are environmentally aware. Many clients are solo travellers, whilst others are couples or groups of friends, with a mix of male and female and a range of different ages. The luggage moved seamlessly and the hotel bookings just happened. The hike was tough but we didnt have to worry about administrative details. The detailed support information, via both Walker Pack and the On Foot app, covered all conceivable matters, and our contact support person Louise was accessible and very helpful.
